Spent Five days in the Amazon, close to the Colombian border, in a reserve called Cuyabeno. It was amazing! We saw so much wildlife, led by a guide who grew up in the jungle, who knows all about the flora, fauna, medicinal plants, and cultures in the forest.
We got there by plane, then 2 hour bus ride, then 3 hours by motorized canoe. We saw several kind of monkeys, caimans, the pink dolphin, piranhas, a kinkajou, poison dart frogs, dozens of birds including toucans, macaws, parrots, kingfishers, and more. On a night hike and boatrides, we saw the goliath tarantulas, wolf and silk spiders, a scorpion, a tree boa poisonous caterpillars- plenty of fright for us all!
Our lodge was an eco-lodge, which had solar power, conserved energy and water, and had a small footprint. It hired local staff from the villages and even when we were on the river and saw one pop bottle, we reversed to pick it up. There is a high respect for the local culture and reserve rules.
We really loved it, and would have liked to have stayed longer, but we were pretty stinky from moist and muddy clothes! Will post photos tomorrow.
